The back-to-school checklist includes the usual items such as clothing, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies. Did you know that if your child is a student athlete, it is usually required to have children get a sports physical, too? Most schools and coaches require this standard medical checkup prior to even practicing a sport, and in some states, it’s the law. These simple medical exams are crucial in determining any potential risks and future health issues that may affect an athlete’s performance or safety, and although brief, they can provide peace of mind to the parents and coaches of the competing child. Beach Kids Pediatrics can provide sports physicals to student athletes who are returning to school and the field with no appointment necessary.

What is a Sports Physical?

Sports Physicals: Youth Soccer GameSports physicals are a simpler version of the full physical that most adults are accustomed to, but in a much shorter time frame, and often at a reduced cost. In a sports physical, the physician is looking for any health issues or abnormalities that may hinder a child from participating in a specific athletic event. Compared to a full adult physical, student sports physicals are also generally much quicker, usually lasting around 25-30 minutes.

What Does a Sports Physical Look For?

During a sports physical, the child can expect the standard exam basics: height and weight measurements, blood pressure and pulse checks, listening to heart and lungs via stethoscope, visually inspecting ears, nose, and throat, and inquiring about any prior illnesses, injuries, or other pertinent medical histories. The physician will also check the child’s joints for strength, gait, flexibility, and range-of-motion while ruling out any potential issues before the athletic season begins. In addition to these routine procedures, boys of puberty age will likely be briefly checked for abdominal wall and testicular issues such as hernias. Girls may be asked about their menstrual cycles to gauge levels of overall health.

Ensuring that this basic medical exam occurs before your child begins practicing or competing will assure you of your child’s overall health, safety, and performance on the field. Beach Kids Pediatrics will ensure that your child gets the proper care before starting a new athletic journey. Request your child’s appointment today!
